Burckhardt’s Eyes. The Photography of Renaissance Architecture between Pedagogy and the Museum

Vortrag von Alina Payne

Opening of the academic year 2017/2018 of the Rome Art History Network.

Focusing on the collaborations between the art and cultural historian Jacob Burckhardt and a circle of architects and scholars indebted to his ideas of the Renaissance, this lecture considers how our reading of architecture as »monument« and as isolated urban sculptural form has been conditioned by the specific medium of photography and the photographic atlas.

The Lecture is an initiative of the Rome Art History Network (RAHN), an international network of art historians based in Rome, which promotes the exchange of ideas between researchers from the foreign academies and Italian universities. For information on the RAHN: www.romearthistorynetwork.com.
