Instruments of art historical research

The Bibliotheca Hertziana, Max Planck Institute for Art History has a specialist library consisting, at the time of writing, of some 307,000 volumes; the institute’s photographic library contains approximately 831,000 images, making the Hertziana one of the world’s best equipped centres for research into Italian art.

With a keen eye

Federico Zuccari conceived the gaping maw of hell, the mascherone, as a fantastically bizarre entrance to his garden. The photograph shows a detail of the grotesque face. Today it serves as the entrance to the library of the research institute.
