Artistic Concepts of Europe
Dr. Jana Graul
The project examines artistic ideas and concepts of Europe from an art historical as well as cultural-historical perspective. Against the backdrop of changing discourses, political and religious circumstances as well as different origins, it explores, among others, what the term “Europe” to early modern and modern artists actually meant; how and in which way they situated themselves in relation to the concept und identified with it; which images of Europe they conceived and how they related their work with it. The focus of this broad-based study is thus placed on the mental and material artistic figurations of the ‘old continent’ and the question of how art and artists contributed to the ‘Imaginaria of Europe’.
