Natural Light, Religious Time and Mural Painting in Late Medieval and Early Renaissance Italy (c.1250–1500)


Giosuè Fabiano is a Ph.D. student at the Courtauld Institute of Art. His interests lie at the intersection of observational sciences (astronomy, optics, meteorology), visual arts, and liturgical space in Late Medieval and Early Renaissance Italy. His Ph.D. project investigates the epistemic role of natural light within scientific practices, art-making, and devotion. In 2019, he was a recipient of a NIKI Fellowship at the Dutch University Institute for Art History in Florence, where he explored illustrated manuscripts on optics, astronomy, and meteorology originated in the conventual libraries of Santa Maria Novella and Santa Croce. He also worked as a postgraduate research assistant at the Kunsthistorisches Institute in Florenz in the Department Gerhard Wolf.
He previously studied at the Warburg Institute and the National Gallery in London, where he earned an MA in Art History, Curatorship, and Renaissance Culture. He also holds a BA in Art History from Sapienza, University of Rome, with optional modules on medieval philology and paleography.
