Perpetuum. Continuous Pictorial Fields 'around' 1555
David Zagoury, Ph.D.
The research project deals with circular images arranged in an annular format. Surveying flat and convex artefacts of various media from the early modern period, it proposes that this format acted as an invitation to the viewer to rotate the object in order to read the scene depicted on it. The self-contained and perpetual structure of these representations, together with their rotating movement, would have evoked a pictorial microcosm. The project therefore examines the relationship these continuous pictorial fields entertain with the development of spherical cartography.
