After Engagement. Art and Community in Italy 1960–1978

The dissertation investigates the fraught notion of collectivity within postwar Italian art through the oeuvres of Renato Guttuso, Carla Accardi, Nanni Balestrini, and Mauro Staccioli. A fifth artist, Michelangelo Pistoletto, figures centrally in the conclusion. This deliberately unconventional constellation comprises individuals typically associated with distinct groups yet, I suggest, bound by a host of shared concerns. Precisely in breaking with the traditional battle lines in the existing historiography, my project facilitates a fresh understanding of the issues and imperatives that have so far defined our approach to art made in Italy in the age and aftermath of the "economic miracle", a period marked by increasingly violent social unrest and the dissolution of traditional models of community.
