DESCRIPTION:Change notice: Public event without registration\nWhat are the
temporalities of neural networks? How do machines encode time\, and how do
they structure our experience of time? What are the consequences of a neu
ral network’s attempt to simulate temporal and historical ways of being?
This conference\, hosted by the Machine Visual Culture research group\, s
uggests temporality as the fil rouge to pierce through the disparate level
s at which critical AI intervenes\; from infrastructures to neural archite
ctures\, from crowdworkers to latent spaces. The temporal is at the heart
of critiques around\, for instance\, labour-time in training data (Malevé
\, Pasquinelli)\, the historical situatedness of AI models (Offert\, Heuse
r)\, modes of temporal existence in LLMs\, alongside other foundational ac
counts of computational media (Stiegler\, Ernst).\nSpeaker: Conference

DESCRIPTION:From the nineteenth century onwards\, progressive historians em
phasized labour as central to social history\, and to artistic practice it
self: the artist as worker. But what becomes of this view when labour—ar
tistic as well as non-artistic—is fundamentally reframed by artificial i
ntelligence? This question connects directly to the work of Hans Hess\, th
e German Jewish émigré art historian who introduced museology to the UK
and played a decisive role in the postwar reception of German Expressionis
 m. Hess placed labour at the centre of art history\, and his many unpublis

DESCRIPTION:Change notice: Event location: Zurich (CH) and online\nRecent d
iscussions in aesthetics and art history\, literature\, and visual studies
have seen a renewed interest in questions of form and formalism. Whether
in connection with algorithmic thinking\, computer vision\, and artificial
intelligence\, or with transcultural comparisons\, revised narratives of
 modernism\, re-conceptualisations of formlessness\, and cognitive reflecti
ons on connoisseurship\, form and formalism have regained currency in curr
ent discourses on a transhistorical and transdisciplinary level. It has be
come clear that an “archaeology of knowledge” about these crucial noti
ons is indispensable in teasing out their critical potential and in produc
tive application of what has also been termed “new formalism” or “po
 st-formalism”.\nSpeaker: Conference

DESCRIPTION:Change notice: Public event without registration\nThe relations
hip between avant-garde artists and consumer culture has often been framed
as antagonistic. Nonetheless\, in the period between the First and Second
World Wars\, commercial display became a significant means through which
modern design was introduced to the general public. Recent studies have de
monstrated how commercial display practices have “contributed to the for
mulation of new forms of aesthetic experience\, as well as art and design
typologies” (Lasc et al. 2017: 5). Taking as a case study the Romanian a
vant-garde movement\, this talk examines how the visual realm of retail pr
actices intersected with new trends in art and design\, in particular the
introduction of modern design for the domestic interior in Bucharest.\nSpe
