Franz Engel studied philosophy, art history and musicology in Berlin and Rome and received his M.A. in 2012 with a thesis on Edgar Wind’s philosophy of embodiment. He held positions as research assistent at the Collegium for the Advanced Study of "Picture Act and Embodiment”, the Fritz Thyssen research group "Iconic Form Processes”, the Interdisciplinary Laboratory "Image Knowledge Gestaltung”, and the Census of Antique Works of Art and Architecture Known in the Renaissance, all at the Humboldt University Berlin. In September 2019 he defended his dissertation on Pictures of Chaos. Studies in the Depiction of the Primordial Formlessness, supervised by Horst Bredekamp, which will presumably be published by the end of 2020.
