Paesaggi del Sud

The investigation of the layering of symbolic places in Southern Italy, and of how art has interpreted their histories, calls for further inquiry into the relationship between discursive regimes and the visual grammars of cinema, extending beyond the borders of Italy’s national production.

Since the second half of the twentieth century, audiovisual works, together with production and distribution practices, have contributed to both the disruption and consolidation of spatial conceptions of Southern Italy, thereby shaping processes of internal negotiation within Italian society.

This line of inquiry examines the role of cinematic imagery within the figurative palimpsest and the discursive infrastructure that shapes the porous notion of the Meridione, asking what kinds of images are mobilized through the representation of its landscape.
