Department Weddigen: Art of the Modern Age in a Global Context

The department of Prof. Dr. Tristan Weddigen at the Bibliotheca Hertziana is pleased to offer

Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships for the 2026/27 academic year.

Under the overarching theme of Art of the Modern Age in a Global Context, the department welcomes projects addressing – but not limited to – one of its five research priorities: Rome Contemporary, Materiality and Mediality, Italy in a Global Context, Transnational History of Art History, and Digital Visual Studies. Applicants should be at an early stage in their career and can propose a funding period of three to twelve months. Scholarship recipients may request an extension through a new application, provided that the total duration of the scholarship does not exceed twelve months. Successful candidates will be part of a group of junior scholars related to one of the five topics and are expected to actively participate in the department’s activities.

Online interviews will take place in mid-March. The earliest start date is May 1st, 2026. Contracts must end before September 15, 2027. In addition to providing personal information on the application platform, candidates must upload separate PDF files containing:

  • cover letter
  • curriculum vitae
  • list of publications
  • description of the research project including bibliographic references and a work plan (max. 12 p.)
  • optional writing samples (max. 10 MB each)
