Double Projection: Two Art Historical Film Essays – Carl Lamb "Raum im kreisenden Licht" (1936) and David Y. Kim / Amelia Saul "The Desert in the Lagoon" (2020)
Barbara Schrödl, David Young Kim, and Amelia Saul will screen and discuss two films that articulate and develop art historical ideas: Carl Lamb’s 1936 "Raum im kreisenden Licht" and Kim and Saul’s new film “The Desert and the Lagoon.”

The seminar will examine the two films that articulate and develop art historical ideas outside the conventional methods of printed publication and conference presentation. Barbara Schrödl will present Carl Lamb’s 1936 film “Raum im kreisenden Licht (Space in Circling Light),” which was screened at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in 1938. Based on Lamb’s doctoral dissertation, the film focuses on the change in natural light in the pilgrimage church of the Scourged Savior on the Meadow over the course of a single day. David Young Kim and Amelia Saul will premiere their new film “The Desert and the Lagoon,” which offers a close reading of Giovanni Bellini’s Saint Francis in the Desert and investigates the notion of the ground in Renaissance painting.
