Transient Photographs: How Time Reshapes the Photographic Archive

Since the early 19th century, photography has offered a method to fix the fleeting image. Since then, however, we have become aware of the transient character of all photographic materials.

In his talk, Steffen Siegel will discuss the impact of time on the photographic archive, its varied effects regarding visual information, and the challenges it offers for researchers who wish to engage with the various histories of photography.

Steffen Siegel has been a professor of the theory and history of photography at Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen (Germany) since 2015. At Folkwang, he is the director of the master's program "Photography Studies and Research" and the doctoral program for the history of photography. In 2021, he co-edited, together with Maria Antonella Pelizzari, "Circulating Photographs", a special issue of the journal "History of Photography". It results from a study course held at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in 2019.
