The Art of Resistance: A Research of Queer Art in the Brazilian and Peruvian Contexts from 1990 to Present

Luigi Crea, M.A.

The doctoral research project explores the landscape of contemporary queer artistic practices in Latin America, a continent characterized by colonial control over gender and sexuality. Using queer and decolonial theories and methodologies, it focuses on Peru and Brazil, where there is a strong history of artistic production and curatorial narratives challenging norms of gender and sexuality. This project traces actors shaping queer art in Latin America, their aesthetic strategies and global dialogues, and the impact on mainstream recognition of Latin American queer art. It will produce a cartography by taking seriously the intersections of gender, sexuality, race, class, history, and place.
