A Land of Their Own. Italian Women Artists in the Colony of Libya
Vita
Giulia Beatrice is scientific assistant in the
department of Prof. Dr. Tristan Weddigen. She completed her doctoral
dissertation entitled Avant-Garde Propaganda. Colonialism and Futurism
at the University of Zurich, in co-tutelle de thèse with Sapienza Università di
Roma in 2025. Her doctoral research has been supported by the Bibliotheca
Hertziana (2021-2023), the Swiss National Science Foundation (2023–2025)
and the Beinecke Library at Yale University (2024).
During her PhD, Beatrice was also lecturer at the Specialized Master of Arts “Art
History in a Global Context” at the University of Zurich and member of the
Bibliotheca Hertziana’s research unit “Decolonizing Italian Visual and Material
Culture: From Nation-building to Now”. Most recently (2025), she was awarded
the Gianni Franzone Fellowship by the Wolfsoniana in Genoa with the project Muri
alle donne! Artiste italiane e pittura murale nella colonia della Libia (1934-1940).
