Painting Anticolonialism: The Global Networks of Afro-Brazilian Art in Postwar Rome

Vita

Abigail Lapin Dardashti is Assistant Professor of Art History and Digital Humanities at the University of Miami. Her research examines modern and contemporary Latin American and Latinx art, with a focus on international exchange, cultural diplomacy, migration, and racial and ethnic formation. More specifically, her work explores how migration and travel have shaped African and Jewish diasporic artistic productions in the Americas during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Currently under review, her first book project, Transatlantic Migrations: Politics and the Rise of Afro-Brazilian Art examines how Black artists from Brazil developed their work and through their experiences abroad, ultimately shifting perspectives about diasporic art. Her research has received support from the Fulbright Program, the Mellon Foundation, and the Getty Research Institute, among others. She has curated exhibitions in Brooklyn and Philadelphia and has held curatorial fellowships at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Studio Museum in Harlem. In fall 2026, she is a postdoctoral fellow at the Bibliotheca Hertziana—Max Planck Institute for Art History, and in spring 2027 she will serve as Fulbright Scholar at the University of São Paulo. At the Bibliotheca Hertziana, she will conduct research about Rubem Valentim and Wilson Tibério, two Afro-Brazilian artists who spent significant time in Rome, and develop her digital art history project Migration, Diaspora, and Art in Brazil.
