News from the Piranesi Studio: Drawings of Giovanni Battista Piranesi and his workshop at the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe
In summer 2014, nearly 300 drawings held by the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe were newly attributed to Giovanni Battista Piranesi and his workshop. For decades, the drawings mounted in two albums had been attributed to the Karlsruhe architect Friedrich Weinbrenner (1766 - 1826). It had been assumed that Weinbrenner had executed them during his stay in Rome from 1792 to 1797.

These artworks, currently being explored in a research project, shed new light on Piranesi's multifaceted activities and - for the first time - allow new insights into the artistic practice in his studio. In addition, this material opens new research questions regarding the dissemination of drawings from the Piranesi workshop to the studios of contemporary artists and architects.
