"Burocrati, buonisti, barconi": The AfD and the Lega Nord Rhetoric as Paradigm of National-Populist "Anti-Lingua"
In a time in which politics are under the siege of strong Schmittean dichotomies, the boundaries between "us" and "them" – the "national community" and the "enemy" –, are once more emphasized through the radicalisation of political "lexical arsenals". The Italian and German cases are particularly clear examples of the triumph of this "populist Zeitgeist".

This paper will embrace the study of nationalist rhetoric, visual communication and language use (including resignifications, metaphors, political neologisms and overlexicalization strategies) in the specific context of Italian and German national-populism, identified here as key representatives of the political language use categorized by Richard Griffin as the "Lingua Quarti Imperii" of the new extreme right.

Miguel Rivas Venegas is a postdoctoral researcher of the Ministry of Science JDF postdoctoral programme at the Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea/University of the Basque Country as well as a fellow at the cluster of excellence 2020 "Temporal Communities: Doing Literature in a Global Perspective" (Berlin). His current research encompasses both the qualitative analysis of political language use of Spanish right-wing populism in transnational perspective (German-speaking countries, Italy, France) and the study of the self-representation strategies and visual materials produced by contemporary Rechtspopulismus in Europe.
