The Marble Floor of the Cathedral of Sant'Agata de' Goti (XIII Century). Sacred Space, Symbolism, Iconography and Material Aspects

Cecilia Goletti, M.A.

This research focuses on the opus sectile and tessellatum floor of the Cathedral of Sant'Agata de' Goti (BN), which has yet to be the subject of a monographic study. The aim of this project is to investigate the complex and rich iconographic design underlying the mosaic carpet, composed of intertwined discs, aniconic elements, and figurative inserts. The investigation aims to analyze and reconstruct its original appearance, before the major restoration work that compromised its legibility, in relation to the sacred space and liturgical furnishings of the medieval building, as well as to explore its iconographic, iconological, liturgical, and material significance, without forgetting the intrinsic value attributed to the floor within the context of the medieval sacred building.
