Materialität und Medialität

Die Kunstgeschichte ist immer auch eine Geschichte künstlerischer Medien und Materialien und ihrer Rezeption.

Als standortbestimmtes Institut, das in besonderem Maße der Objekt- und Kontextforschung verpflichtet ist, widmet sich die Bibliotheca Hertziana verstärkt der künstlerischen Materialikonologie und Mediengeschichte von der frühen Neuzeit bis zur Gegenwart. Zu diesem Forschungsfeld gehören die Ding‑, Geschlechter-, Technologie- und Wirtschaftsgeschichte sowie die künstlerischen Techniken als Wissensform.

Der Forschungsschwerpunkt möchte einen neuen Blick auf die visuelle Kultur eröffnen und bislang übersehene materielle und mediale Eigenschaften der Kunstwerke untersuchen. Von besonderem Interesse sind die unterschiedlichen Arten, wie diese Eigenschaften zur Wirkung eines Werkes beitragen sowie ihre Verknüpfung mit den ästhetischen, sozialen und rituellen Gebrauchsweisen der Objekte. Die Abteilung knüpft an vorangegangene Forschungen zum textilen Medium an und erweitert diese auf Themen wie das kinetische Bild und die Wachsplastik.
