Materialità e medialità

La storia dell'arte è sempre anche storia dei mezzi e dei materiali artistici, nonché della loro ricezione.

Da istituto fortemente influenzato dalla sua posizione, particolarmente attento allo studio degli oggetti e dei contesti, la Bibliotheca Hertziana si dedica sempre più all'iconologia dei materiali e alla storia dei media dalla prima età moderna ad oggi. Rientrano in questo campo di ricerca la storia delle cose, dei generi, delle tecnologie e dell'economia, nonché le tecniche artistiche come forma di conoscenza.

Tale priorità di ricerca intende gettare un nuovo sguardo sulla cultura visiva, studiando quelle caratteristiche materiali e mediali sinora trascurate delle opere d'arte. Di particolare interesse sono le diverse modalità con cui queste caratteristiche contribuiscono alla resa di un'opera nonché il loro legame con l'utilizzo estetico, sociale e rituale degli oggetti. La sezione si riallaccia a pregressi studi sul mezzo tessile ampliando la ricerca a tematiche come l'immagine cinetica e la scultura in cera.
