Italien im globalen Kontext

Der Schwerpunkt Italien im globalen Kontext strebt an, das Verständnis der italienischen Kunst seit der Frühen Neuzeit und ihrer Rezeption neu zu betrachten, indem künstlerische Entwicklungen untersucht werden, die sich außerhalb der vorwiegend urbanen Zentren der italienischen Halbinsel vollzogen haben. Damit wird das Paradigma der Zentralität von Kunstmetropolen gegenüber untergeordneten Peripherien in Frage gestellt und stattdessen eine pluralistische Sichtweise mit Blick auf ein globales Verständnis vorgeschlagen. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt auf Lateinamerika und seinen Umgestaltungen des Barock, der an der Abteilung auf Forschungen zu den Wechselwirkungen zwischen Rom und dem Vizekönigreich Peru im 17. Jahrhundert sowie auf der lateinamerikanischen Übernahme deutschsprachiger Kunstwissenschaft im 20. Jahrhundert aufbaut. Darüber hinaus wird in Bezug auf das ventennio fascista die Frage nach den imperialistischen Aspekten der modernen Architektur, des Urbanismus und der Kunst in den von Italien besetzten Gebieten untersucht. Anhand eines Vergleichs mit den Regionalismen in Staaten wie Brasilien und Argentinien, die gegen einen westlich-modernistischen "Neokolonialismus" kämpften, kann die faschistische Kolonialarchitektur als regionalistische Konstruktion des Anderen betrachtet werden. So kann ein komplexeres Bild der globalen Modernismen zu einer neuen politischen Kunstgeografie beitragen.
