Hanneke Grootenboer argues that in the context of the early modern debate on women’s education (also referred to as the querelle des femmes), these images should also be understood as portrayals of female thinking—the pictorial equivalent of the melancholy male philosopher—and the act of needlework they represent, as a moment of subversion and escape. Second Sex, Gender Check and the Feminist Avant-Garde

Research Seminar Series: “Shifting Images and Ideas of Europe’s East: An Art Historical Approach from the Margins”
Speaking of Europe often presupposes the existence of a stable unity of people with a common history, culture and identity. Yet it is not only the current political crisis that reveals major imbalances within the continent, where the gap between ‘West’ and ‘East’ looms particularly large. This series of research seminars offers the opportunity to read Europe's East from a historical perspective, in its relationship to other European regions, some of them (self-)declared as the center, as well as to the neighboring continent of Asia. Over sixty years ago, Curt Bühler, curator of rare books at the Morgan Library, mused, “The fifteenth century, it may well be said, was one of the most curious and confused periods in recorded history. Not the least curious and confusing of its aspects is the story of the book production in that century.” While Bühler was reflecting on the impact of print, his comments apply well to England’s situation, which, for the most part of the fifteenth century, remained unrocked by any media revolutions.

When researching the history of microscopy, Rome is a natural place to start. It is in Rome under the auspices of the Accademia dei Lincei that Federico Cesi published his microscopic observations of bees in his Melissographia (1625) and the Apiarium (1626). In honour of the recently elected Barberini Pope, Urban VIII, whose family’s coat of arms includes three bees, the bee became the first object of visual presentation of the research that was made possible through the new instrument that would soon be called “microscope.” [mehr]

Mapping Uncertainty. Early Modern Global Cartography, 21st Century Discussions

KNIR Colloquium
How to present uncertain knowledge? What did, and what do, mapmakers do when they are not sure? This posed a large problem in early modern times, the so-called ‘age of exploration’. Where and how to insert whole new continents, disputed discoveries, questionable coastlines, and islands beyond the imagination? What if the experiences of explorers contradicted age-old narratives? And how to present the yet unexplored parts of the world? The issue of visualizing uncertain information on a map, however, is not just an early modern issue. 21st-century scholars making maps, for example with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) face comparable problems. How to state ‘maybe’ or ‘I don’t know’ with only ones and zeros at your disposal? Where to draw the line? How to demonstrate (or hide) your uncertainty? [mehr]

Rudiments and Revenants: Warburg, Darwin and the Biology of Gesture

Research Seminar
By analyzing Aby Warburg’s reception of evolutionary thought – both with and against Darwin – this research seminar offers a new reading of Warburg’s understanding of history, demonstrating how the circulation of images between art and science enabled the conversion of expressive gesture into a fossil of deep time. Seminar Series: Reflections on the Digital Turn in the Humanities and the Sciences

Seminar 8. Final Reflections: A Workshop to Explore the Seminars’ Findings
In the early modern period, a new visual culture was generated as a result of new media (as a result of the printing press); new tools of observing the world (such as telescopes and microscopes); and new questions about nature and the world. Similarly, one could argue that the current development of digital media (such as the internet, and online publication options) and digital tools (such as online catalogues and databases, or 3D modelling software) has led to new ways of finding answers and resources. This invites reflection on how these modern technologies impact the generation of new questions. In the past years, the Max Planck Research Group Visualizing Science in Media Revolutions has organised a series of online seminars which asked researchers, librarians, software developers, curators, archivists, and artists to reflect on the impact that digital media and tools have on their working practices. Diagrams and Other Visual Aids in the Early Modern University Classroom

Research Seminar
On 19 July 1595, while lecturing on astronomy in the Protestant seminary school at Graz, Johannes Kepler had an epiphany. "Values Resemble a Dance, Not a Statue" – Sergei Eisenstein's Capital Project

Research Seminar
Sergei Eisenstein’s planned film adaptation of Karl Marx’s Capital stands as one of the most enigmatic projects in the history of cinema. Though never realized, it has haunted the imagination of many filmmakers, historians, and philosophers to the present day. A recent look into Eisenstein’s archive revealed the full scope of his plans: between October 1927 and September 1928, he gradually transformed his working diaries into an editing board. This "visual instruction in the dialectical method", as Eisenstein himself called his project, comprises over 500 pages of notes, drawings, press clippings, expression diagrams, plans for articles, negatives from October, theoretical reflections and extensive quotations. What can be seen and read is not a film but a series of variations on the themes of economy and capitalist exploitation. [mehr]

Ringvorlesung: "Entangled Art History" Objekte-Narrative-Diskurse

"Only anthropophagy unites us", Oswald de Andrade stated in the first verse of his seminal Manifesto Antropófago of 1928. While it is a foundational part of the Brazilian modernist discourse, starting with the Semana de Arte Moderna of 1922, and has been recently adopted by transcultural and postcolonial approaches, the current call for a decolonization of Art History invites to reread the Manifesto and ask whether regurgitating Cannibalism can still be a critical tool. Measure as Erasure

The construction of the modern world largely rested on faith in measuring. "Benché senza colori abbino tutta la forza dell’arte". In questo modo, nel 1590, Giovanni Paolo Lomazzo descriveva le opere realizzate a chiaroscuro, restituendo tutta la complessità teorica di un’opera pittorica eseguita con una tavolozza ridotta. Una pittura così realizzata, infatti, assume un singolare vigore espressivo in virtù dell’assenza della consueta policromia a suggerire i colori della realtà. [mehr]

The City: Traces of Urban Memories

Conference
Cities, like any other forms of human settlements and like works of art, are in constant flux, a process of shaping and reshaping, of being erased, demolished, newly designed, renovated, and preserved. Like a canvas on which marks of artistic activities—lines, scratches, stains of colors, and spots—are visually documented, the urban landscapes accumulate and display through their particular structures, planning, architecture, parks, and public monuments histories of urban creativity and imagined landscapes of inhabitants. Thus could be read both the plethora of built substances that turns a space into a place and the markers of remembering and forgetting. Sites epitomize durations and changes and embody a sense of time. [mehr]

This political form of collective belonging, more than ever necessary in the collective battle against international fascisms and global neoliberalisms, also involves a necessary act of dis-belonging to overcome the particularisms of essentialist identity. How can solidarity operate anew on that basis? [mehr]
On the occasion of the upcoming lecture by T. J. Demos on January 13, we will be screening the following works:– Black Quantum Futurism, Black Space Agency Training Video, 2019 (4 minutes) – Thirza Jean Cuthand, Reclamation, 2018 (11 minutes) – The Otolith Group, INFINITY minus Infinity, 2019 (56 minutes) The screenings will be followed by a discussion. Seminar Series: Reflections on the Digital Turn in the Humanities and the Sciences

Seminar 3. Emails and Letters: Curating Correspondence in the Digital Age
In the early modern period, a new visual culture was generated as a result of new media (as a result of the printing press); new tools of observing the world (such as telescopes and microscopes); and new questions about nature and the world. Similarly, one could argue that the current development of digital media (such as the internet, and online publication options) and digital tools (such as online catalogues and databases, or 3D modelling software) has led to new ways of finding answers. This invites reflection on how these modern technologies impact the generation of new questions. In order to examine this, the Max Planck Research Group Visualizing Science in Media Revolutions is organising a series of online seminars that asks researchers, librarians, software developers, curators, archivists, and artists to reflect on the impact that digital media and tools have on their working practices. Visual Politics on the Street: Art and Rhetoric in the Rome of Paul III (1534-1549)

Research Seminar
When Paul III was elected Pope in 1534, Rome was still scarred by the Sack of 1527. When he died, in 1549, it seemed that the Golden Age had been restored. How did such transformation unfold? This seminar explores the interventions carried out along the Via Lata to reveal Paul III’s urban politics. [mehr]
At the intersection of art and ritual, processional paraphernalia endorse crucial roles for collective identity: creating and maintaining group unity, building solidarity in the face of crises, and possibly offering disruptions of law and order or signaling outcasts. The aesthetic appeal of carefully-crafted artefacts (from candles to flags, canopies, reliquaries, etc) is essential but must be studied together with performativity, objects being the material essence of ritual. Computer-aided 3D-modeling and visualization are widely used in the examination and communication of cultural heritage. In the case of demolished or seriously altered art and architecture, source-based 3D-reconstruction represents an appropriate methodology of approach to this kind of research object. [mehr]

Visualizing Complexities: Practices and Heuristics of Digital Models in Art History

International Workshop
Digital models help to visualize complexities heretofore unapproachable through more conventional methods of art history. The seductive qualities of these models—which tend to transcend those of words—are increasingly untempered by their digital and thus potentially alien nature. But with the use of these tools come challenges. [mehr]

Division and Affinity: Visualizing Diversity in Natural History, 17th ‒ 18th Centuries

Research Seminar
A key development in early modern natural history that so far has received very little attention is the introduction of various dichotomous and tabular diagrams to illustrate classifications of plants and animals in the early modern period. Joachim Jungius (1587-1657), professor and some-time director of the academic school Johanneum in Hamburg, was one of the first scholars to use dichotomous diagrams to carry out a systematic analysis of the morphology and taxonomy of plants. Going in Eremo: Withdrawal and the Eremitic Ideal in NY, P. Morgan Library, MS. M.626

Research Seminar
At the turn of the fourteenth century, eremitic life—typified by the third and fourth century saints known as the Desert Fathers—was presented as a spiritual ideal not only for mendicant friars but also for the laity who were encouraged to withdraw to their own "desert", any space where they could connect with God. Art historians have traditionally explored the significance of the Desert Fathers by examining wall and panel paintings, while illustrated copies of the tradition’s fundamental text have gone largely unremarked. During the second half of the 17th century, the natural philosophers associated with the Royal Society of London increasingly embraced empiricism, identifying sensory experience as the foundation for knowledge of nature. They did not, however, make this choice in the naive belief that the senses give us reliable insights into the world around us, or even that nature contains meanings to which the human mind has access. Like recent theorists of the relationship between humans and nature, therefore, the scientists of 17th-century England were alive to the possibility that our perceptions of nature might not bear much of a resemblance to nature as it exists for itself. Altruistic Desire and Self-Abnegation in the Crypts of Santa Maria della Concezione

Research Seminar
Dismissed as examples of a superstitious baroque "necroculture", the bone-encrusted mortuary installations of the Capuchin Order are typically viewed though a reductive optic of unhistoricized Catholic repentance or Protestant contempt. In this talk, I will examine the social and soteriological stakes of using human remains as an artistic material for the creation of Christian funerary art, asking above all why the blatant materiality of death became so important for Capuchin religious experience in Counter-Reformation Rome. Seminar 1. From the Analogue to the Digital: On The Changing Role of the Image in Collections and Research
In the early modern period, a new visual culture was generated as a result of new media (as a result of the printing press); new tools of observing the world (such as telescopes and microscopes); and new questions about nature and the world. In its wealth of relics, Rome surpassed all other cities of the Roman Empire by far. Pope Damasus I (366-384), known as "cultor martyrum", initiated the cultivation of this heritage, a practice that was systematically renewed under Paschal I (817-824). Yet it did not take long for relics of foreign saints to be imported into Rome and integrated into the cult practice and sacred topography of the city. [mehr]

Machine Vision(s) : a Seventeen-Century Catoptric Device Reconsidered/Reconfigured

Research Seminar
In early modern Europe, it was not uncommon that mirrored devices were used to provide intense visual experiences. These practices were actually part of a scientific culture in which aesthetics played a fundamental role. Catoptric devices offered a wide range of optical illusions such as luxuriant gardens with topiaries and fountains, but also flying bodies, transformed faces and fire-spewing dragons or even alleys with splendid houses and palaces. Architecture’s fascination with the machinic dates to its very origins. San Paolo fuori le mura and Roman Historicism in the 1830s

In a time in which politics are under the siege of strong Schmittean dichotomies, the boundaries between "us" and "them" – the "national community" and the "enemy" –, are once more emphasized through the radicalisation of political "lexical arsenals". The Italian and German cases are particularly clear examples of the triumph of this "populist Zeitgeist". [mehr]

Epistemic Imagery and their Functions: the Case of Diagrams

Research Seminar
An 'epistemic image' may be defined as an image that was crafted so as to help us understand something. But how is it possible that an image teaches us something that words cannot teach us? This lecture will start with the issue of the category of the epistemic image, and notably the question of the interaction of text and image when these are produced together, as happens in philosophical or scientific texts. The diagram – one of the most basic and visually least appealing 'epistemic images' – will serve as our case study. [mehr]

Il cantiere del cinquecento: architettura a decorazione. I. Roma

Conference
The questions of ruins and their images oscillate in the history of art between the vanitative interpretations related to the early modern period and the aesthetic categories of romanticism, while for the cultural studies the theoretical reflection on the ambiguities of memory and oblivion stands in the foreground. Although Bernini's self-esteem and wit are well documented, they are rarely pointed out in academic studies of his works. An on-site analysis of the chapel, which is normally closed to the public, will offer an opportunity to better understand Fra Angelico's use of the space and the way he integrated his fictive architectural structures within it. It will also clarify the chapel's position within the papal apartments, opening discussion about accessibility and function. [mehr]
Renaissance artists made extensive use of architecture in their work. By creating striking compositions and highlighting structural and ornamental features, they demonstrated their architectural knowledge and originality. In spite of this, two-dimensional buildings have often been interpreted in purely spatial terms, or as lesser counterparts of built structures - an approach that prevents us from recognising the communicative potential of architectural settings. [mehr]
This lecture is based on the ongoing research and exhibition project on the legacy of French actress, video maker and activist Delphine Seyrig. Mostly known as one of the leading actresses of 1960s–1970s French cinema, during the 1970s Seyrig became a media and a feminist activist working collaboratively within the framework of the women's liberation movement.

The workshop aims to analyze and discuss various categories of texts related or linkable to sacred, ritual and liturgical spaces in the Middle Ages, with a geographical focus on Southern Italy. [mehr]
The firmly institutionalized model of historical interpretation "ancient – medieval – modern" is a child of the so-called secularization paradigm and the classic case of a Eurocentric corset. The current work on new, post-Eurocentric concepts of Latin-European history is a paradigm shift that shakes historical scholarship in its foundations. [mehr]
Histories of Photography have been written almost as long as photographic pictures exist: Daguerre's manual from 1839 and the first chapter of Talbot's The Pencil of Nature, penned in 1844, are the earliest examples of such an interest in media history. These narratives are shaped according to ongoing improvements of apparatuses and techniques that have been developed by (male) inventors. [mehr]

"Guttuso, 'Guernica', Gramsci"

Research Seminar
From 1940, the year he joined the underground Communist Party, until 1943, the year of Mussolini's fall, the Communist artist Renato Guttuso carried a postcard reproduction of Picasso's Guernica in his wallet, describing it as 'the ideal membership card of the ideal party'. [mehr]
Italian art during the middle of the twentieth century existed at a tumultuous crossroads of geopolitics and Modernist aesthetics. From within this volatile circumstance emerged a constant searching for artistic languages with which to explore Italy's presents and recent pasts. [mehr]
The development of a modern photographic culture and visual literacy in Italy was driven by the creation of illustrated periodicals and propelled by a dynamic group of editors and writers working for the magazine factory of Angelo Rizzoli in Milan. A close look at the Rizzoli illustrated weeklies published between 1927 and 1938, at the height of Italian Fascism, demonstrates a culture of entertainment and consumerism that was as inventive as that of European periodicals. [mehr]

The Past as a Source for New Identities

Research Seminar
History of Architecture is often used as an approbation of the roots of a country or nation. Greece and Rome were the cradle for all Europe and Historicist approaches in the architectural production were typical in the 19th and also 20th century. [mehr]
Many urban projects realized during the Ventennio remain part of the Italian landscape and, together with architectural monuments and works of art, create a constellation of surviving images of Fascist visual culture in contemporary Italy. As part of the national cultural heritage these artefacts are protected by preservation laws. However, in the ambiguous process whereby Italy confronts its Fascist and colonial past, they have also become a nexus of critical debate and political struggle. [mehr]

Marks in the Sand: Abstraction, Aesthetics, and the Definition of the Human

Research Seminar
The starting point of this talk is the motif of the geometrical figure found traced in the sand, a story that Vitruvius relates of the Socratic philosopher Aristippus: "being shipwrecked and cast ashore on the coast of the Rhodians, he observed geometrical figures drawn thereon, and cried out to his companions: 'Let us be of good cheer, for I see the traces of man.'" [mehr]
How, in the context of postwar Rome, can we better understand changing exhibition practices through paying closer attention to architecture – what Daniel Buren refers to as "the inevitable background, support and frame of any work?" Or, put another way, how did postwar Rome's built environment serve as a base connective tissue for evolving exhibitionary engagement? [mehr]
Documents inform about the wish of Mehmet II, the Conqueror of Constantinople, to be portrayed by a Western painter. Some Italian artists (including Costanzo di Moysis da Ferrara) came to Istanbul in the 1460s and 1470s, but everything would seem to indicate that the sultan did not obtain what he wanted. [mehr]

In 1969, man set foot on the Moon – time to reflect on the role of art in the most mediatized event of modern times. A shared concern of Italian operaismo-minded artists of the 1960s and 1970s was to devise images that mirrored both the material culture of the period’s labor struggles and "the workers’ point of view". [mehr]
"Artistic Research" is a key term in contemporary art discourse and is intended to unite the fields of humanities and natural sciences. Artistic research, however, already existed in the 19th century, particularly in the field of history. This lecture explores the contribution of artists to the formation of the scientific discipline of art history in the 19th century. [mehr]
In the last decades, the far-reaching diffusion of electronic data processing instruments seems to have supplanted traditional methods of manual drawing and three-dimensional architectural model making. The capturing, planning and visualization of objects and buildings appears to be positively dominated by digital technologies and semi-automatic production methods, ranging from parametric and algorithmic modelling systems and digital recording tools to interactive animations and automatic 2D and 3D printing. Mechanik der Natürlichkeit

Organized within the framework of the exhibition "Toward a Concrete Utopia: Architecture in Yugoslavia", 1948-1980 on view at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, this study day convened by co-curators Martino Stierli and Vladimir Kulić with curatorial assistant Anna Kats and Tristan Weddigen, director of the Biblioteca Hertziana, will not be limited to architecture but instead will look at networks of cultural production and exchange more broadly along the Adriatic coasts. What do we mean - or, better, what should we think we mean - when we use the term 'period eye'? Baxandall famously defined it as cognitive style, encompassing the visual skills and 'habits of inference and analogy' brought to the viewing experience by people of a particular time and place. [mehr]
In summer 2014, nearly 300 drawings held by the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe were newly attributed to Giovanni Battista Piranesi and his workshop. For decades, the drawings mounted in two albums had been attributed to the Karlsruhe architect Friedrich Weinbrenner (1766 - 1826). It had been assumed that Weinbrenner had executed them during his stay in Rome from 1792 to 1797. [mehr]
Whilst art history is increasingly assuming a global approach by restructuring in full its method of theorising and teaching the discipline, this research workshop proposes to reflect on the concepts of style and periods which have forged fields of study and made them relevant to modern day life. [mehr]
As if revisiting the religion's primordial decision in favor of an exoteric, rather than esoteric, identity, the Italian painters of the fourteenth century populated Christian subjects and scenes with semi-outsiders: watchers and doubters, anachronistic visitants, sponsors clerical and lay. Pressure on narrative from the outside tested the integrity of the artwork. [mehr]
How can art find ways to represent the undefinable "je ne sais quoi" of the bodily and moral ideal of Grace? The paper deals with two French artists as different as Jean Siméon Chardin and François Boucher who satisfied very different tastes of art in the 18th century. [mehr]

Roughly two years after Rose of Lima was beatified (1669), the Peruvian Dominican Order, asked Juan Meléndez, the Chronicler of the Order, to write a description of the festivities with which the City of the Kings celebrated the promotion to sainthood of her most ilustrious child. Meléndez saved no rhetorical effort to stress the importance of the celebrations that took place in 1668 and 1669. [mehr]

There was a time - but is it just over? - when some images were not just looked at, but eaten. Produced to be swallowed, they were consumed by the mouth rather than the eyes. This presentation will focus on this particular way of experiencing images, by examining the consumption of the edible artefacts (body paintings, eucharist, waffles, edible sculptures, figurative cakes) over the longue durée, and by highlighting the anthropological and cultural stakes that inform this specific practice. [mehr]
This interdisciplinary Study Day will focus on how early modern cities responded to or attempted to anticipate social or health crises by repurposing structures, constructing temporary shelters or buildings, or adapting urban spaces in the context of emergencies. These include, but are not limited to, disease outbreaks, displacement, migrations, wars, natural disasters, famines, etc. Over the centuries, these interventions have taken various forms, such as lazzaretti, temporary military barracks, makeshift refuges, and quarantine or segregation zones, among many others. [mehr]
Social change after WWI led to an accelerated change in the built environment. Within a broad stylistic scope of architectural and urban design projects, the structural 'DNA' of Italian historic cities was seen as a basic planning guideline. Historic paradigms determined not only trends in conservation but guided new approaches to architecture as well as urban and landscape design. [mehr]
As complex systems with multiple institutional, civic, and religious topographies, early modern cities presented the foreigner with a beguiling series of mysteries. What tools, therefore, were available for gaining some kind of understanding of a foreign society that would allow travelers to connect their experience to home?

The term "Mannerism" carries a fraught and contentious historiography that plays a significant role in shaping both the definition and scope of current scholarship. Formative studies by Jacob Burckhardt, Heinrich Wölfflin, Werner Weisbach, and Kurt Heinrich Busse imbued the term "Mannerism" with a pejorative connotation that effectively marginalized mid- to late-sixteenth century art. [mehr]
The choir screens of medieval churches were systematically dismantled in the 16th century, a process that obliterated the internal divisions within churches as well as their altars, pulpits, painted and sculptural decoration, and sepulchral monuments. [mehr]
Shared Spaces? Mobility, Cohabitation and Cultural Exchange in Early Modern Venice This paper draws on my larger research project on spaces of arrival for migrants and travellers to early modern Venice. It argues particularly that the city's many lodging houses offer a valuable key to understanding the nature and impact of mobility in an early modern metropolis. [mehr]
In name, a guidebook assures the reader of clarification and direction, but the term only seems to neatly define what to expect from these volumes. Instead, the claim to make sense of the unknown is complicated by shifting narrative strategies, choices of language, and the inclusion of illustrations. Recent interest in issues of orientation and subjectivity has shed new light on guidebooks; in addition, a profusion of new printed and digital editions of these works have reinvigorated a discussion of guidebooks as a form of knowledge produced at the intersection of description and dispersal. [mehr]
We owe the Italian Renaissance picture more than the ideal human figure. Experiments in figuration, whether they involve contour or sfumato, cannot exist without ground, here understood in three senses of the word: first, the preparation of a given support (such as a gesso ground on panel); second, the plane on which figures stand; and third, the field in and against which figuration occurs. [mehr]
The discoveries of Columbus focused attention on the newly discovered but barely known regions on the far side of the earth, a new zone of convergence where East and West met and crossed over into one another. It was now possible to think beyond the "inhabited world" known since Antiquity and to consider the earth in global terms, which is to say as a geometric object viewable from more than one side. [mehr]
The Italia illustrata (written in the 1450s and published 1474) is a historical and geographical description of Italy in a topographical order. Biondo's narrative is based on a number of empirical sources, some are known, some are unknown and open for speculations. [mehr]
The aim of the seminar is to evaluate the usefulness of various concepts of intermediality derived from a modern literature on the subject in constituting a history of early modern media. To this end we are bringing together senior scholars of early modern art who have already been working on these themes, though not in these terms, alongside younger scholars whose research focuses on intermedial questions. This seminar will explore Raphael's use of materials and techniques in drawing and in doing so will present new discoveries. Over the past thirty years, approaches to the study of works on paper have gradually moved beyond univocal questions of connoisseurship. Recent research has demonstrated the effectiveness of looking at drawings as archaeological objects, whose materiality and stratigraphy can speak of their history. [mehr]
[mehr]
The ideas regarding "barbarians" and "barbarity", produced since Classical Antiquity and until Early Modern times, have been studied in several and many times contrasting ways. The general consensus tends to stress the fact that the construction of an other simultaneously implies the conformation of the identity of the individual and the collective creating those distinctions. This conference explores the phenomenon of performative iconicity in medieval art, an aspect of iconic presence manifested through chant and never recognized as image heretofore in scholarship. This non-representational icon is revealed in the synergy between the temporality of the liturgical ritual and the acoustics of reverberation. [mehr]
This conference will explore some of the different metaphorical, conceptual and cultural meanings associated with the Italian expression 'the mental woodworm' (il tarlo della mente). The woodworm as an image for a nagging thought (rovello, in Italian) is not common in English. [mehr]

This talk presents recent attempts to 'operationalise' Warburg's concept of Pathosformel - that is to say, to transform it into an algorithm. This process implies not only a conversion into computer language, but also an explicit reading of the concept itself, whose unforgiving nature forces us to consider each component of the concept in detail. [mehr]
